Pheropsophus verticalis
In the pygidia, or lower abdomen, of such beetles, they possess glands that release a poisonous and corrosive substance. This secretion serves as primary protection against predators. In this specific species, this substance is volatile, resulting from the union of hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide, which are stored in different sections of the abdomen. When necessary, this beetle mixes the chemicals with water and catalytic enzymes to generate temperatures near boiling point. This beetle can spray this in many directions and use it to harm even humans.
